Dear Korea...

Dear Korea,

How is it that all of the sudden Baba Yetu has gotten so popular over there?

I appreciate all the questions, but I don't speak Korean, so I can't understand half of them.

It's some sorts of trend caused by civilization V.
They started playing civilization V. Surely, Gandhi is a poster child of that game. And Korean found that Gandhi in civilization V act like conquerer, not pacifist.
That's ridiculous situation. So many parody of Gandhi in that game is made in Korea. Surely, it has tremendous popularity now.
And Korean people think your song 'baba yetu' as a symbolic song of the whole civilization series.
So when they post some article about civilization, they normally 'baba yetu' as background sound.
I think this is the answer why "Dear Korea,
How is it that all of the sudden Baba Yetu has gotten so popular over there?".

I guess someone already post the answer, but it is pretty simple reason. Most gamer in Korea loves Civilization series, therefore, many people is spending their time with its new series V. Many people want to share their story happened while playing version V, and your song, most impressive song among Civilization series a kind of symbol for all the Civilization series. That's why it is popular now. I guess if next version of Civilization became popular again, then your song will be popular one more time again.

By the way, I ...really love your song - really impressive. Keep up your good work!

OK. Here is much better than Blog lol.

It's time to explain what is happening in Korea. After Civilization V has been released, someone posted an article about a balance problem related to India, the most powerful country in Civilization V. He explained comically his experience while he was playing Civilzation V that he denied Gandhi’s requested to exchange corns to DIAMOND so that Gandhi’s India invaded and devastated his country. He also attached Gandhi’s picture from Civilization V and “Baba-Yetu” as a background Music for his posting. His posting has been spreading because his article was both sublime paradoxes, and FUN!
Now, so many people describe Gandhi as a symbol of a corn, axis of evil, dictator, or a selfish warlord. In all comical articles with photoshopped Gandhi's pictures, Baba Yetu is being played. It's just a kind of fun for them. They are just enjoying a paradox to comparing a ruthless and violent "Warlord" Gandhi with a peaceful music “Baba Yetu.”

That’s why so many Koreans now searching information about Baba Yetu. We all know it’s one of the greatest game theme music. Many Koreans are falling in love and fascinated by it. However, well, I know it’s not a fun experience that someone requested to give away music for free in A COMPOSER’S BLOG. Yes, they could be babies who don't have any basic idea about copyright and composer's efforts.

But.. please remember. They just try to contact you since they really love your music even if they do wrong…

p.s. word verification is now shown in IE8 ...

Being native Korean, I'm not very fluent in English but I want to let you know what is happening in Korea..

this is the very first what all was happened.
It says 'while playing civ5, damn gandhi suggested to exchange my diamond with his corns. refusing it, he declared war and destroyed all my towns. fuxxing gandhi, he supposed to be non-violent'
('ㅋㅋㅋㅋ' in the comments mean laughing)

This story spreaded around the Korea, producing so many parodies.
For example..
'8-bit baba yetu'
synchronized with Guan Yu

Oh well, I guess you've found out what's going on around here.

It's just another wacky Korean culture and such 'code' of humour.

I heard recently bunch of pirates are asking your music for free.

Please have some patient .. or ignorance as copyright ethics are pretty much weak therefore they won't pay for something doesn't look fancy including your signed CD as well as Civilization. :(

P.S: I'm Korean resides somewhere else in the world. So, if it's going to be published, don't be mad on me guys. We all know that's the truth.

haha korea's craze over baba yetu is based on two things: first is that when civ v came out, because the civ series is known to be so addictive (its often referred to as a time machine, cuz time flies by so quickly when you play the game), people were joking around by posting things like "im now riding the time machine, see you in 2011."
And this interest just skyrocketed with, as others explained, this post about ghandi suggesting to exchange corn for diamond and destroying the player when he refused to do so. People found this irony of non-pacifist ghandi quite humourous, tons of parodies are being made right now, all with baba yetu as a bgm (cuz its the most memorable music of the civilization series). Civilization, ghandi and baba yetu are all part of this huge recent internet meme.
So I think you can take this as a compliment since so many people are loving your music!
